By Mary C. O’Connell – July 2, 1980

It has been my privilege to record the memoir of Rudolph J. Schaefer, Jr., in which he recalls, with great affection, the grandparents he knew, his mother, father, brother and sister, his young years.

Here he tells of meeting and marrying Lucia Moran and of the children they nurtured, and the pride he so justly takes in his family, both earlier and later generations. He tells of his second marriage to Janet Udall, his love for her and the happy years they have shared.

His narrative describes the founders of the F. & M. Schaefer Brewing Company and the successive generations whose brains and energy resulted in the successful operation of a major beer company in this country. His long years as head of the company not only attest to his executive ability but to his instinctive and creative talent for public relations.

Rudie Schaefer was, above all, a faithful man–faithful to God, faithful to his family and their well-being and faithful to the large obligations he accepted as one who has been given the gifts of intelligence, opportunity and privilege.

He enriched the lives of all those who knew and loved him.

  1. I found an old article, originally from the New York Times, about Mary O’Connell and it covers her work on the memoir with Rudie.
